This Privacy Policy explains how the owners and operators of shownotes.tv (“shownotes.tv”, “we”, “us” or “our”) handle personal information in connection with the website at shownotes.tv and its related pages and feeds (the “Site”). By using the Site you acknowledge this Policy. It forms part of our Terms of Use.

The short version

  • You can read the Site without an account and without telling us who you are.
  • We do not set cookies, and we do not sell or rent your personal information.
  • Like every website, the services we use to run the Site receive technical data such as your IP address when you visit.
  • If you email us, we keep your message so we can deal with it.

1. Information we collect

Technical and log data

When you visit, our hosting and security provider, Cloudflare, automatically processes technical information needed to deliver and protect the Site. This includes your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you request, the referring page, the date and time, and similar request data. It may be kept in server logs for a limited time for security, abuse prevention, debugging and aggregate traffic statistics.

Web fonts

Pages load typefaces from Google Fonts. To deliver them, your browser connects to Google’s servers, which receive your IP address and standard request information. Google’s handling of that data is covered by Google’s own privacy policy.

Information you send us

If you email us, for example to report an error, make a request or send a legal notice, we receive your email address, name (if given), the content of your message and any attachments.

What we do not collect

We do not offer accounts, comments or payments, and we do not knowingly collect sensitive information such as health, financial or government identification data. Please do not send us such information.

2. Cookies and similar technologies

We do not currently set cookies or use advertising or cross-site tracking technologies. Our service providers may use strictly necessary technical mechanisms to keep the Site secure and protect it from abuse. If we add analytics, advertising, a newsletter or any other feature that changes what we collect, we will update this Policy before it takes effect and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent.

3. How we use information

We use personal information only to:

  • operate, deliver, maintain and improve the Site;
  • keep the Site secure and detect, prevent and respond to abuse, fraud, attacks and technical problems;
  • understand aggregate use of the Site;
  • respond to your messages, corrections and requests;
  • comply with law and legal process, and establish, exercise or defend legal claims; and
  • enforce our Terms of Use and protect our rights, property and safety and those of others.

Where the EU or UK GDPR applies, we rely on our legitimate interests in running and securing a website, on compliance with legal obligations, and, where applicable, on your consent.

4. How information is shared

We do not sell, rent or trade personal information. We share it only:

  • with service providers who process it for us, such as Cloudflare (hosting, content delivery, security and storage), Google (web fonts) and our email provider, under their own terms and privacy commitments;
  • when we believe in good faith that disclosure is required by law, subpoena, court order or other legal process, or is necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of us, our readers or others;
  • in connection with a sale, merger, financing, reorganization or transfer of all or part of the Site or its assets, in which case the information may be transferred to the new owner; and
  • with your consent or at your direction.

We may share aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably identify you for any purpose.

5. International transfers

We operate from Canada and our service providers operate globally, including in the United States. Your information may be processed, stored and accessed outside your country, where privacy laws may differ and where courts and authorities may be able to access it. By using the Site you acknowledge these transfers. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards offered by our providers.

6. How long we keep information

Technical logs are kept by our providers for limited periods under their standard retention settings. Emails are kept for as long as needed to deal with them and for our reasonable records, legal and dispute-resolution needs, then deleted.

7. Security

The Site is served only over encrypted HTTPS connections and we use reputable providers with strong security practices. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee the security of any information, and you send information to us at your own risk.

8. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, including under Canada’s PIPEDA, the EU and UK GDPR, and US state privacy laws such as California’s, you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, to withdraw consent, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to receive a copy of your information. To make a request, email legal@shownotes.tv. We may need to verify your identity and may decline requests where the law allows. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

We do not sell or “share” personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, as those terms are defined under California law, and we do not use personal information to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you. You can also block or delete cookies and other stored data in your browser settings.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or your local data protection authority.

9. People we write about

Our articles discuss television programs and people who appear in them, based on the programs themselves and on information those people or others have made public. If you are featured in an article and believe it contains inaccurate personal information, or information that should not be there, email legal@shownotes.tv with the URL and details. We will review your request and correct or remove information where appropriate.

10. Children

The Site is a general-audience site that is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Third-party sites

The Site links to websites and services we do not control. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, and we are not responsible for them.

12. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Policy at any time by posting the new version on this page and updating the effective date. Your continued use of the Site after a change means you accept the updated Policy. Where the law requires it, we will seek your consent to material changes.
